Looking at dueling culture in Upper Canada gave an interesting look into the lives of the generally upper class males that took part in this tradition. Although duels were something I had previously known about, I had never looked much into this topic and didn’t realize it had actually been so prevalent in Canada. While the dueling culture clearly existed in several walks of life it seems to me that the upper class, and particularly lawyers were the primary people taking part in duels. This is interesting because it gives a sense that these people were looking for some way to prove themselves to be strong or honorable in a newly modern society where warfare, particularly for the upper class was much less common. Although it seems that the dueling culture in Upper Canada was not very long lived, it is still particularly interesting, and gives an interesting look into the lives of early Canadian citizens.
